Why Two Prong?
For a few years, I ran a site called Thinking on These Things. Initially, it was your run-of-the-mill Bible study site. In 2016, I along with some people from church and across the nation committed to reading the Bible chronologically through in one year. Each day I posted something about the reading for the day. Those posts are still here on this site and if you were to read them all from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, you would notice something interesting I think. At then end of 2016, I let thinkingonthesethings.com slide off into the internet underworld and moved on to this; Two Prong Outlet. Let me explain why.
During this great Bible study experience in 2016, my thoughts about things have changed. It’s hard to describe just exactly how, but committing myself to daily reading and writing has forced me to deal with things that I’ve been happy to sweep under a rug in times past.
Faith is messy. It isn’t as clear cut as I once assumed it was. Answers aren’t easy. Paradoxes abound. On the old site, I wrote as a confident evangelist – “Hey! Listen to me, I’ve got stuff figured out!” On this site, I’m writing from a voice that says, “I’m trying to figure this faith thing out; here’s what I have so far.” This, for me, is a fresh start.
Two Pronged Problem?
You’ve probably had the two-pronged outlet experience before, right? You have a three-pronged plug for some appliance and all your house will afford you is a buffet of two-pronged outlets. What do you do? For starters, you could change the plug. Are you capable? Will you get shocked? You could get an adapter, but will it be grounded? You really have a problem on your hands because three-pronged plugs weren’t made for two-pronged outlets and two-pronged outlets were made for a time when a three-pronged plug was unheard of.
What do I mean?
I was raised in a conservative church of Christ – we’ll call it a two-pronged outlet. There is nothing inherently wrong with a two prong outlet – it is what it is. After reading the Bible as intensely as I did in 2016, I feel as though I have developed a three-pronged faith. Can you see the problem? Being aware of all that I am currently aware of, I don’t always feel like I fit in with the two-pronged church of my youth. So, where do I fit in a Christian landscape full of two-pronged churches? Is there a three-pronged outlet? Shall I change the outlet? Will I get shocked? Maybe an adapter is in order. Will I be grounded?
You see, I’m in a conundrum and I’m willing to bet that I’m not the only one facing the two-pronged outlet problem. This faith thing is messy and I’m going to muddle through it with my chin up. I’m choosing to give my thoughts a voice in hopes that I might be able to help someone else with a two-pronged problem.
I’m going to document my journey here. 2016 was the year of the awakening (veiled Star Wars reference) and 2017 will be the beginning of an amazing adventure (veiled Hobbit reference) If you have a two-pronged problem, join in – maybe we can figure this out.
O Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of the eternal Father, Thou hast said, “Without me you can do nothing.” In faith I embrace Thy words, O Lord, and bow before Thy goodness. Help me to complete the work I am about to begin for Thine own glory: in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Thou, O Christ, art Thyself the fulfillment of all good things! Fill my soul with joy and gladness, and save me, for Thou art all merciful.
Grace and Peace,
